Ukraine D Visa (D-03) — Work Visa Guide
The D visa (long-stay national visa) is what you actually receive in your passport from the Ukrainian consulate in your home country. The D-03 subtype is specifically for employment based on a Ukrainian work permit.
What is the D-03 visa?
The D-03 is a Ukrainian long-stay national visa issued specifically to foreign workers with an approved work permit. Unlike short-stay tourist visas, the D-03 lets you enter Ukraine, register at migration office and start working immediately.
The visa is single or double-entry, valid for 90 days. Within those 90 days you must arrive in Ukraine and apply for a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) which then becomes your long-term residence document.
Your D-03 application is filed at the Ukrainian consulate in your home country. Asia Work prepares all documents before you arrive at the consulate so the appointment itself is straightforward.
A Ukraine D visa is a long-stay visa that allows foreign citizens to enter Ukraine for purposes lasting more than 90 days. For workers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other Asian countries, the Ukraine D visa — specifically the D-03 subcategory — is the entry document required after obtaining a work permit. Without a valid Ukraine D visa, you cannot legally enter Ukraine for employment, regardless of whether you hold a work permit.
This guide covers all D visa types, required documents, the application process at Ukrainian consulates, processing times, costs, and common rejection reasons.
What Is a Ukraine D Visa?
The D visa is Ukraine's long-stay national visa, distinct from the C visa (short-stay, tourism, business) and the B visa (transit). A D visa grants the holder the right to enter Ukraine and stay for the duration specified on the visa — typically 90 days to 1 year — depending on the purpose.
For foreign workers, the D visa serves as the bridge between receiving a work permit (processed in Ukraine by the employer) and physically entering the country. The work permit alone does not grant entry rights. You need both documents: the work permit authorizes employment, and the D visa authorizes entry and stay.
After entering Ukraine on a D visa, workers must apply for a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) within 45 days. The TRC replaces the D visa as your long-term legal status document. Read more in the Residence Permit guide.
D Visa Types — D-01, D-02, D-03, D-05
Ukraine issues several subcategories of D visa based on the purpose of stay:
- •D-01 — for immigration purposes (permanent residence applicants, family reunification)
- •D-02 — for education (foreign students enrolled at Ukrainian universities)
- •D-03 — for employment (foreign workers with a valid work permit)
- •D-05 — for other long-term purposes (volunteers, religious workers, humanitarian missions)
For workers recruited through Asia Work, the relevant type is D-03. This is the only D visa subcategory that corresponds to paid employment. All references to "D visa" in our guides refer to D-03 unless otherwise stated.
The D-03 visa is issued only after the Ukrainian employer has obtained a valid work permit from the State Employment Service. The consulate will not accept a D-03 application without proof of an issued work permit.
Who Needs a Ukraine D Visa?
A D visa is required for all citizens of countries that do not have a visa-free or visa-on-arrival agreement with Ukraine who intend to stay longer than 90 days. This includes citizens of:
- •India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka
- •Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, China
- •Most African countries
- •Several Middle Eastern countries
Exceptions: Citizens of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and several other CIS countries can enter Ukraine visa-free for up to 90 days. However, even visa-free nationals need a D visa (or TRC) if they plan to work legally, because the 90-day visa-free stay does not authorize employment.
Citizens of EU countries, the UK, USA, Canada, and several other nations also have visa-free entry but still require a work permit and subsequent TRC for employment beyond 90 days.
Documents Required for Ukraine D-03 Visa
The following documents are required when applying at a Ukrainian consulate for a D-03 work visa:
- •Valid passport — with at least 12 months remaining validity and at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps
- •Completed visa application form — downloaded from the consulate website or obtained at the consulate
- •Passport-sized photographs — 2 photos, 3.5 × 4.5 cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
- •Work permit confirmation — official letter or copy of the work permit issued by Ukraine's State Employment Service
- •Employment contract or offer letter — from the Ukrainian employer, specifying position, salary, and duration
- •Health insurance — valid international health insurance covering Ukraine for the duration of the visa
- •Proof of accommodation — letter from the employer confirming housing arrangements in Ukraine
- •Bank statement — showing sufficient funds for travel and initial stay (typically equivalent of $500–$1,000 USD)
- •Police clearance certificate — from your home country, issued within the last 6 months
- •Educational documents — apostilled and translated into Ukrainian (copies)

Where to Apply for a Ukraine D Visa
You apply at the Ukrainian consulate or embassy in your home country (or country of legal residence). The main consulates processing D-03 work visas for Asian workers:
- •India — Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi. See our detailed D Visa India guide.
- •Pakistan — Embassy of Ukraine in Islamabad. See our D Visa Pakistan guide.
- •Bangladesh — Embassy of Ukraine in Dhaka (or nearest authorized consulate)
- •Nepal — processed through the Embassy in New Delhi (India) as Ukraine does not have a separate mission in Kathmandu
- •Vietnam — Embassy of Ukraine in Hanoi
- •Indonesia — Embassy of Ukraine in Jakarta
- •Philippines — processed through the nearest regional embassy
Applications must be submitted in person. Most consulates require an appointment, which can be booked online or by phone. Walk-in applications are generally not accepted for D visa categories.
Step-by-Step D Visa Application Process
Step 1: Receive Your Document Package
After Asia Work's legal team obtains your work permit, we prepare your complete consulate document package. This includes the work permit confirmation, employment contract, insurance details, and accommodation letter. We send this package to you via courier (DHL/FedEx) along with detailed instructions for your consulate appointment.
Step 2: Book a Consulate Appointment
Contact the Ukrainian consulate in your country to schedule an appointment. Appointment availability varies — in peak seasons (January–March), wait times at the New Delhi consulate can reach 2–3 weeks. We recommend booking as soon as you receive your document package.
Step 3: Attend the Consulate Appointment
On the appointment day, bring:
- •All original documents plus one photocopy of each
- •Visa application form (filled out completely, no blank fields)
- •Visa fee payment (cash or bank draft, depending on consulate policy)
- •Your document package from Asia Work
The consulate officer reviews your documents, may ask basic questions about your employment (position, employer name, city), and collects your passport for visa stamping. Some consulates conduct a brief interview.
Step 4: Wait for Processing
Standard processing time is 10–15 working days. Some consulates offer expedited processing (5–7 days) for an additional fee. During processing, your passport remains at the consulate.
Step 5: Collect Your Passport with D Visa
The consulate notifies you when your visa is ready. Collect your passport in person or arrange authorized pickup. The D-03 visa sticker in your passport shows: validity dates, permitted number of entries (single or multiple), and purpose code.
Processing Time and Cost
Processing Time
| Consulate | Standard | Expedited |
|---|---|---|
| New Delhi (India) | 10–15 working days | 5–7 working days |
| Islamabad (Pakistan) | 10–15 working days | 7–10 working days |
| Dhaka (Bangladesh) | 15–20 working days | Not available |
| Hanoi (Vietnam) | 10–15 working days | 5–7 working days |
Times are measured from the date of document submission at the consulate, not from the date of appointment booking.
Cost
The D-03 visa fee varies by consulate and is subject to change. As of early 2026:
- •Standard processing — approximately $100–$150 USD equivalent (paid in local currency)
- •Expedited processing — approximately $200–$250 USD equivalent
Additional costs may include:
- •Health insurance — $30–$80 USD depending on coverage and provider
- •Document courier fees — $40–$80 USD for international courier
- •Apostille fees — varies by country ($20–$100 USD)
Asia Work provides a country-specific cost breakdown before you begin the visa process, so there are no surprises.
After Receiving Your D Visa
Once your D visa is stamped in your passport, the clock starts. You must enter Ukraine within the visa validity period (typically 90 days from issue date). Key next steps:
- •Book your flight — most workers fly to Chisinau, Moldova, and travel to Ukraine by ground transport. Read our Moldova Transit guide.
- •Apply for Moldova transit e-visa — if your nationality requires it (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh). The e-visa is processed online in 5–7 days.
- •Confirm arrival details with Asia Work — share your flight itinerary so we can arrange border pickup and accommodation.
- •Carry all original documents during travel — passport with D visa, work permit copy, employment contract, health insurance. Border officers may ask to see any of these.
Do not overstay your D visa. If you enter Ukraine on the last day of visa validity, you still have 45 days to apply for a TRC. But arriving early gives you more buffer for registration and document processing.
Common Reasons for D Visa Rejection
Ukrainian consulates reject D visa applications for these reasons:
- •Incomplete documents — missing work permit confirmation, no health insurance, or unsigned application form
- •Passport validity too short — less than 12 months remaining at time of application
- •Photos do not meet requirements — wrong size, colored background, glasses, or older than 6 months
- •Financial proof insufficient — bank statement showing very low balance or no recent transactions
- •Work permit expired or not yet issued — the work permit must be active at the time of D visa application
- •Previous immigration violations — overstay in Ukraine or Schengen area on a prior visa
- •Criminal record — undisclosed criminal history that surfaces during background checks
Asia Work's pre-submission review catches the first five issues before you visit the consulate. Our rejection rate on D visa applications is below 5%, compared to 10–15% for unassisted applicants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the D-03 visa valid?
The D-03 visa is typically valid for 90 days (single entry) or up to 1 year (multiple entry). Most first-time workers receive a single-entry visa valid for 90 days. After entering Ukraine, you apply for a TRC which replaces the visa.
Can I work in Ukraine while my D visa is being processed?
No. You cannot enter Ukraine or begin working until the D visa is stamped in your passport. The work permit exists in Ukraine, but you need the D visa to physically enter the country.
What is the difference between a D visa and a work permit?
The work permit authorizes a specific employer to hire you. The D visa authorizes you to enter and stay in Ukraine. You need both. The work permit is issued first (by the State Employment Service in Ukraine), and the D visa is issued second (by the consulate in your country).
Can my family get D visas too?
Not on your D-03 work visa. Family members can apply for D-01 (family reunification) visas, but only after you receive a Temporary Residence Card in Ukraine. Read the Residence Permit guide for details.
What if the consulate asks me questions during the appointment?
Consulate officers may ask about your employer, job role, salary, and how you found the job. Answer honestly and directly. Asia Work provides a pre-appointment briefing with expected questions and recommended answers based on your specific case.
Can I extend my D visa from inside Ukraine?
No. D visas cannot be extended. Instead, you apply for a Temporary Residence Card (TRC) within 45 days of entering Ukraine. The TRC replaces the D visa as your long-term residence document.
What happens if my D visa expires before I travel?
If your D visa expires before you enter Ukraine, you must reapply at the consulate. Asia Work assists with reapplication at no additional service cost, though consulate fees must be paid again.
